The given numbers are probably bad, since the answers are not whole numbers of dollars, or even whole numbers of cents.
Here is a non-algebraic attempt to solve the problem; perhaps another tutor will show an algebraic solution method which also shows the numbers to be bad.
The ratio of the percentages is 5:8.
Since the return from the 5% investment is 2 times the return from the 8% investment, the ratio in which the money is divided between the two investments is 5:16.
So 16/21 of the $36,000 was invested at 5% and 5/21 of it at 8%.
But those are not good answers....
