You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Both start each with x dollars.

Grace, x-245
Janice, x-74

x-74=4%28x-245%29
Solve for x.

.
You can solve it mentally.

Let x be the amount which Grace still has after spending her 245 dollars.

Then the amount which Janice still has after spending her 74 dollars is 4x.

The difference, 4x - x = 3x, is equal to the difference 245 - 74, which is 171 dollar (note that you can calculate it mentally !).

Then x = 171%2F3 = 57 dollars (and you can calculate it mentally, too !)

Hence, Grace did have initially 245 + 57 = 302 dollars. ANSWER

CHECK. 302 - 245 = 57; 302 - 74 = 228; 228%2F57 = 4. ! Correct !
