Question 1133140: Grace and Janice had an equal amount of money at first. After Grace spent $245 and Janice $74, Janice had 4 times as much money as Grace. How much money did each girl have at first? Found 2 solutions by josgarithmetic, ikleyn:Answer by josgarithmetic(39617) (Show Source):
You can solve it mentally.
Let x be the amount which Grace still has after spending her 245 dollars.
Then the amount which Janice still has after spending her 74 dollars is 4x.
The difference, 4x - x = 3x, is equal to the difference 245 - 74, which is 171 dollar (note that you can calculate it mentally !).
Then x = = 57 dollars (and you can calculate it mentally, too !)
Hence, Grace did have initially 245 + 57 = 302 dollars. ANSWERCHECK. 302 - 245 = 57; 302 - 74 = 228; = 4. ! Correct !
