Question 414654: A plane traveled 480 miles to Lisbon and back. the trip was with wind. it took 4 hours. the trip back was into the air. the trip back took 8 hours. find the speed of the plane in still air and the speed of the wind.
so far..i divided 480/4 = 120 (wind) and i divided 480/8 = 60 (air)
but i don't know how to set the equation up.
if you could that would be great! :) Answer by ewatrrr(24785) (Show Source):
Hi
A plane traveled 480 miles to Lisbon and back. the trip was with wind. it took 4 hours.
the trip back was into the air. the trip back took 8 hours.
s + w = 120mph |480mi/4hr = 120mph Good Work.
s - w = 60mph |480mi/8hr = 60mph Good Work.
2s = 180mph
s = 90mph
w = 30mph ( w = 120mph-90 ) from 1st Eq
