Question 1170638: A rod 25 feet long is cut into two pieces such that one piece is 9 feet longer than twice the length of the other piece. What is the mathematical equation for this? Answer by ikleyn(52786) (Show Source):
Let x be the length of the shorter piece, in feet.
Then the length of the longer piece is (2x+9) feet.
The equation is
x + (2x+9) = 25 feet
saying that the sum of the parts is equal to the whole.
