A proportion is 2 ratios that are equal to each other, proportions can be solved by cross multiplying.
ex:
If the ratio is 2 boys to 3 girls, how many girls would there be if there are 60 boys?
First the ratio we are given is 3%2F2, now we are given there are 60 boys. So the proportion we set up to solve would be;
3%2F2+=+x%2F60
60 is on the bottom because that is where we have the amount of boys in the ratio;
now cross multiply;
3%2F2=x%2F60
180=2x
90=x
So there are 90 girls.
