nickels=x quarters=y
x+y=13 coins
now keep in mind that quaters are .25 and nickels are .05.
.05x+.25y=1.25
solve the first equation for y then plug into the above equation to find the amount of nickels.
y=13-x
.05x%2B.25%2813-x%29=1.25
.05x%2B3.25-.25x=1.25
-.20x%2B3.25=1.25
-.20x=-2.00
x=10
we now know we have 10 nickels.
plug 10 into the first equation to find quarters
10%2By=13
we have 3 quarters and 10 nickels.
