Question 1136812: If Alexis has 3 more dimes than nickels and they have a combined value of 150 cents, how many of each coin does she have? Answer by ikleyn(52788) (Show Source):
Take 3 extra dimes aside for a minute (mentally).
Group the rest of coins (that are worth 150-3*10 = 120 cents), in sets each containing 1 dime and 1 nickel.
Each set is worth 10+5 = 15 cents; therefore, the number of sets is = 8.
ANSWER. 8 nickels and 8+3 = 11 dimes.
