Let N be the number of nickels.

Then 12-N is the number of dimes.


Nickels contribute 5N        cents to the total.

Dimes   contribute 10*(12-N) cents to the total.


The "money" equation for the total is

5N + 10*(12-N) = 80   cents

5N + 120 - 10N = 80

-5N = 80-120 = -40  ====>  N = %28-40%29%2F%28-5%29 = 8.


Answer.  8 nickels and  12-8 = 4 dimes.


Check.   8*5 + 4*10 = 80 cents.   ! Correct !
