.
Let  x  be the unknown number.

Then the equation is

x + 5*(x+2) = 4x + 26.

Solve it:

x + 5x + 10 = 4x + 26.

6x - 4x = 26 - 10,

2x = 16,

x = 16%2F2 = 8.

Determine the number Laura is thinking of.
:
Let n = "the number"
write an equation for exactly what it says
n + 5(n+2) = 4n + 26
n + 5n + 10 = 4n + 26
combine like terms
6n - 4n = 26 - 10
2n = 16
n = 16/2
n = 8 is the number

Check this in the original statement
8 + 5(8+2) = 4(8) + 26
8 + 5(10) = 32 + 26
8 + 50 = 58
