You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Sarah is 5 times older than her niece. In 5 years, she will be 3 times older. find Sarah's age now?
If you could help me. .. I don't just want an answer, I want to know HOW to do the word problems.

Let Sarah's current age be S
Then the niece's current age is %281%2F5%29S, or S%2F5 since Sarah is 5 times older than her niece or the niece is 1%2F5 Sarah's age

In 5 years, Sarah will be S + 5, and the niece will be S%2F5+%2B+5

Since in 5 years, Sarah will be 3 times the niece's age, then we can say that:

S+%2B+5+=+3%28S%2F5+%2B+5%29

Solve this for S, or Sarah's current age, and don't forget to check to make sure that Sarah's age is indeed what you calculated it to be.
