Write an equation for each statement
"Ed is 1/6 as old as Laura."
E = 1%2F6L
or
L = 6E

"In 18 years, Ed's age will be 13 years more than 1/5 of Laura's."
E + 18 = 1%2F5(L+18) + 13
Multiply by 5 to get rid of these annoying fraction
5(E+18) = L + 18 + 5(13)
5E + 90 = L + 18 + 65
5E = L + 83 - 90
5E = L - 7
Replace L with 6E
5E = 6E - 7
7 = 6E - 5E
E = 7 yrs old is Ed
