Question 597292: 33. Kelly is 2 years younger than three times Tracy's age.
Part A.
If a represents Tracy's age, write an algebraic expression that can be used to find Kelly's age.
Part B.
If Tracy is 12 years old, how old is Kelly? Show your work.
Part C.
If Kelly is 16 years old, how old is Tracy? Show your work.
What I can understand from this is that I have to figure out an equation on how to find out Kelly's age. I'm thinking that it goes something like this; 2-3a. But I'm not 100% sure. I hope someone can help me with this, I would REALLY appreciate it. :)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Your claim is that

represents Kelly's age when Tracy is years old. Let's see if that idea makes sense.

What if Tracy were 1 year old?

So if Tracy is 1 year old, then Kelly would be -1 years old. Kelly's Mom and Dad might not even know each other yet. That seems fishy, doesn't it?

Let's re-examine what the problem says: Kelly is 2 years younger than three times Tracy's age.

Tracy's age is

Three times Tracy's age is

Two years younger than that is

So if you let represent Kelly's age, you can now write:

Then, for Part B you can substitute 12 in place of and do the arithmetic. And for Part C you can substitute 16 for and solve the equation for
