Let k = Kate's age now
given:
(1) +a+=+2k+
(2) +a+%2B+6+%2B+k+%2B+6+=+60+

(2) +a+%2B+k+=+60+-+12+
(2) +a+%2B+k+=+48+
Substitute (1) into (2)
(2) +2k+%2B+k+=+48+
(2) +3k+=+48+
(2) +k+=+16+
and, since
(1) +a+=+2k+
(1) +a+=+32+
Andy is 32 and Kate is 16
