S +9 = M
S+ 9 = 4S
9 = 3S
S = 3
M = 4 *3
M = 12
Max is 12, sister is 3.

Let m = Max's age
given:

By substitution,
+m+=+4%2A%28m+-+9%29+
+m+=+4m+-+36+
+3m+=+36+
+m+=+12+
Max is 12

+s+=+3+
and
