Question 421513: A father is five times as old as his daughter. In six years he will be three times as old as she will be. How old is the daughter now. ( i know how to solve the problem, i am just stuck with assigning the formulas. In my math class its asked that we assign each person a variable ie: x and the other x+2) Any help would be great thanks.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = Father's age now
Let y = Daughter's age now
given:
(1) +x+=+5y+
(2) x+%2B+6+=++3%2A%28y+%2B+6%29+
-------------------
There are 2 equations and 2 unknowns, so it's solvable
By substitution:
(2) 5y+%2B+6+=++3%2A%28y+%2B+6%29+
(2) 5y+%2B+6+=+3y+%2B+18+
(2) 2y+%2B+6+=+18+
(2) 2y+=+12
y+=+6
and
(1) x+=+5y
x+=+30
The Father is 30 and the daughter is 6
