sum of their ages is 84

Let x represent Sam's age and (84-x) his mother's age

Question states***

(84-x) = 3x

solving for x

84 = 4x

21 = x, Sam's age.  His mother is 63   (84-21))

CHECKING our answer***

63 = 3*21
