You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let p = P's present age
Let t = T's present age
:
Write an equation and simplify for each statement:
:
"3 years ago, Primo is ten times as old as Terzo."
p - 3 = 10(t-3)
p - 3 = 10t - 30
p = 10t - 30 + 3
p = 10t - 27
:
"After 15 years, Primo is only five times as old as Terzo."
p + 15 = 5(t + 15)
p + 15 = 5t + 75
p = 5t + 75 - 15
p = 5t + 60
:
What are their present ages?
Replace p with (10t-27) for p in the above equation
10t - 27 = 5t + 60
10t - 5t = 60 + 27
5t = 87
t = 87%2F5
t = 17.4 yrs, is T's present age
:
p = 5t + 60
p = 5(17.4) + 60
p = 87 + 60
p = 147 yrs is P's present age
:
Not very realistic, but there it is!
