Let m = mother's age
Let s = son's age
Equation 1: m = 5s
Equation 2: 2s = m/2 - 3

Plus m=5s into equation 2:

2s = 5s/2 - 3
3 = 5s/2 - 2s
3 = s/2
6=s

m=5s
m=5(6)
m=30

The son is 6, the mother is 30.
