Let Sherman be x yrs. old
Then grandpa is 7*x = 7x yrs. old

EQUATION:
Sherman's age + Grandpa's age = 72
x + 7x = 72
8x = 72
Divide both sides by 8 to get :
x = 9 yrs. (Sherman's age)
7x = 63 yrs. (Grandpa's age)
