s = teacher's son's age
g = teacher's grandson age
s = t - 24
s = g + 25
t + g = 73
from s = t - 24, solve for t to get t = s + 24
from s = g + 25, solve for g to get g = s - 25
in t + g = 73, replace t with s + 24 and replace g with s - 25 to get s + 24 + s - 25 = 73
combine like terms to get 2s - 1 = 73
add 1 to both sides of the equation to get 2s = 74
solve for s to get s = 74 / 2 = 37
since t = s + 24, then t = 37 + 24 = 61
since g = s - 25, then g = 37 - 25 = 12
