The problem is faulty; there is no solution in whole numbers, which is a requirement for age problems.

x = your age
3x = mother's age

The difference in their ages is (always) 27 years:

3x-x=27
2x=27
x=13.5 NOT VALID!

suppose your mother was 27 years old when you were born.
m = mom's age
then
(m-27) = your age
Presently she is three times as old as you are.
m = 3(m-27)
m = 3m - 81
81 = 3m - m
81 = 2m
m = 81/2
m = 40.5, round it down, Mom is 40, you are 13
