Question 1184125: Please solve.Thank you...
The sum of the ages of a married couple and their four children is 40 years over the century mark. Ten years ago, the sum of the ages of the couple, the eldest child and the second child is 5 decades and five less than the sum of all (the six of them) their ages now. The father’s age is 10 times the age of the youngest while the mother’s age is 8 times that of the youngest. The difference between the ages of the second child and sum of the age of the third and last is zero, while the difference between the ages of the first child and the sum of the ages of the second and last child is zero, find their ages now.

If the author of a problem is going to try to be cute and use unusual language to state a problem, then that language better be precise -- otherwise, we need to guess what the problem really is. And we shouldn't have to guess.

In one place the problem talks about sum of the age(s) of the third and last (children); in another it talks about the sum of the ages of the second and last children. Those two together would suggest that the "last" child is the first child -- which is terribly confusing....

"The difference between the ages of the second child and sum of the age of the third and last is zero"

Is that supposed to be "The difference between the AGE of the second child and the sum of the AGES of the third and last is zero"?
