This time I will do for you   #  5   only.

5.   It took Nilo five thirds of an hour to complete his  Math on  Wednesday,  three fourths of an hour on  Thursday,
and five sixths of an hour on  Friday.  How many hours did he take to complete his homework altogether?

    5%2F3  of an hour on Wednesday;

    3%2F4  of an hour on Thursday;

    5%2F6 of an hour on Friday.

They want you ADD these three fractions and find their sum

    5%2F3 + 3%2F4 + 5%2F6

To add fractions, you write them with the common denominator, which is the number 24.

So, I write the fraction (separately) with the common denominator

    5%2F3 = %285%2A8%29%2F%283%2A8%29 = 40%2F24;

    3%2F4 = %283%2A6%29%2F%284%2A6%29 = 18%2F24;

    5%2F6 = %285%2A4%29%2F%286%2A4%29 = 30%2F24.

Now we can easily add our fractions

      5%2F3 + 3%2F4 + 5%2F6 = 40%2F24 + 18%2F24 + 20%2F24 = now I add the numerators and use the common denominator = %2840%2B18%2B20%29%2F24 =

    = 78%2F24 = %2872%2B6%29%2F24 = %283%2A24%2B6%29%2F24 = 3 6%2F24 = 3 1%2F4 hours = 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The solution is completed.     The answer is   3  hours and  15  minutes.

There is another way to solve the problem.

It is to convert every fraction from hours to minutes and add minutes.

    5%2F3  of an hour = 5*20 minutes = 100 minutes.

    3%2F4  of an hour = 3*15 minutes = 45 minutes.

    5%2F6  of an hour = 5*10 minutes = 50 minutes.

Total time = 100 + 45 + 50 minutes = 195 minutes = 180 minutes + 15 minutes = 3 hours and 15 minutes.

You get THE SAME answer.
