How old are each?
We look at the first sentence:
Janet is three times as old as James.
Let James' age be x
Then Janet's age is 3 times x or 3x.
We look at the second sentence:
The sum of their ages is 64.
x + 3x = 64
4x = 64
x = 16
Therefore James' age = 16
And Janet's age = 3x = 3(16) = 48
