Question 1172055: Michelle solved this system of equations
using the elimination method:
5y=3x-2
-3y=x+18
Here is her work:
5y=3x-2
-3y=-3(x+18)--->-3=-3x-54
Then she added the equations:
5y=3x-2
+-3y=-3x-54
_
2y=-56
y=-28
=3(-28)=x+18
84=x+18
x=66
Did Michelle solve the problem correctly?
If not, explain where she made a mistake
and solve for the correct answer.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! .
On solving single linear equation in one unknown see the lesson

As I understand, the major goal of the visitors of this forum is to learn something and to enrich their knowledge.
In any case, these are the goals, for which this forum does exist.
Looking into this problem, you either know the subject, or not.
If you do not know the subject, I provide you the link to learn it.
If, in opposite, you know the subject, then this problem will not teach you to anything. It will add nothing to your skills.
Therefore, solving this (and similar) problem/problems will teach you nothing - so it is useless to consider them seriously.
It is why I limited myself in my response by pointing the source for you to learn the subject
and did not go to the solution itself.
