Adam is 20 years younger than Brian. In two years Brian will be twice as old as Adam. How old are they now?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let A be the Adam's age.
Then the Brian's age is (A + 20)  years.
In two years  Adam's age will be  (A+2);  Brian's age will be (A+22) years,
and you have this equation
    A + 22 = 2*(A+2).
Simplify and find A
    A + 22 = 2A + 4
    22 - 4 = 2A - A
     A     = 18.
ANSWER.  A is 18 years old.  B is 18+20 = 38 years old.
CHECK.  In 2 years, they will be  20 and 40 years old.   The ratio is 2.  ! Correct !
Solved.
Is everything clear to you in my solution ?
The difference in their ages is (and always will be) 20 years.
When Brian is twice as old as Adam, their ages will be 40 and 20.
That will be 2 years from now; that means their current ages are 38 and 18.
