You can put this solution on YOUR website!
j = Mr. Jones
d = his daughter
:
If Mr Jones was 4 times as as old as his daughter 5 years ago.
j - 5 = 4(d - 5)
j - 5 = 4d - 20
j = 4d - 20 + 5
j = 4d - 15
how old is Mr. Jones If the sum of there age is 55 years
j + d = 55
d = (55-j)
:
j = 4(55-j) - 15
j = 220 - 5j - 15
j + 5j = 220 - 15
5j = 205
j = 205/5
j = 41 yrs is Mr. Jones age

:
Check:
d = 55 - 41
d = 14 is daughter's age
"If Mr. Jones was 4 times as as old as his daughter 5 years ago."
41 - 5 = 4(14-5)
36 = 4(9)
