As soon as you have read the condition twice, you write this equation


    3+%2B+%283%2F4%29x = x-2


Multiply both sides by 4 and get


    12 + 3x = 4*(x-2)

    12 + 3x = 4x - 8

    12 + 8  = 4x - 3x

     x      = 20.


ANSWER.  20 years.

You can also solve this without algebra using a bit of logical reasoning and some easy mental arithmetic.

Adding 3 years to 3/4 of the man's age gets an age that is 2 years less than his actual age.

The means if you add 5 years to 3/4 of the man's age, you will get his actual age.

That means the 5 years you added is 1/4 of the man's age; and that means his age is 5*4 = 20.
