You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let e = Eric's present age
let k = K's present age
Write an equation for each statement
:
Mr.Karikari is five times as old as Eric.
k = 5e
In ten years time Mr Karikari will be thrice as old as Eric.
k + 10 = 3(e+10)
distribute the 3
k + 10 = 3e + 30
k = 3e + 30 - 10
k = 3e + 20
replace k with 5e, from the 1st statement
5e = 3e + 20
5e - 3e + 20
2e = 20
e = 20/2
e = 10 yrs is Eric's age
then
5(10) = 50 yrs is K's age

Confirm solutions in the statement
"In ten years time Mr Karikari will be thrice as old as Eric"
50 + 10 = 3(10+10)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = Mr. K's age now
Let +b+ = Eric's age now
-----------------------------------
(1) +a+=+5b+
(2) +a+%2B+10+=+3%2A%28+b+%2B+10+%29+
-----------------------------------
(2) +a+%2B+10+=+3b+%2B+30+
(2) +a+=+3b+%2B+20+
Plug (1) into (2)
(2) +5b+=+3b+%2B+20+
(2) +2b+=+20+
(2) +b+=+10+
and
(1) +a+=+5b+
(1) +a+=+5%2A10+
(1) +a+=+50+
--------------------
Mr. K is 50
Eric is 10
-------------
check:
In 10 yrs Mr. K is 60
In 10 yrs Eric is 20
60 is 3 times 20
OK
