His birthday was December 31, 2019. He had just turned 9 then. 

So on January 1, 2020, "two days ago" was December 30, 2019, 
the day before he turned 9, so he was still 8.

Since his birthday is December 31, he will turn 10 on December 31, 2020.

Therefore next year, on January 1, 2021, he will be 10.
