Let x be the David's age.


From the condition, you have this equation 


    %28x-5%29%2F%28x%2B8%29 = 2%2F3.


To solve it, cross multiply; then simplify


    3*(x-5) = 2*(x+8)

    3x - 15 = 2x + 16

    3x - 2x = 16 + 15

     x      = 31    is the current David's age.      ANSWER

The difference between 5 years ago and 8 years from now is 13 years.

If the ratio of his ages at those two times is 2:3, then those two ages are 2*13=26 and 3*13 = 39.

So 5 years ago David was 26; that means 11 years ago he was 20.
