let y = the age of the mother of ade today.
3 years ago, ade was 5.
formula for that is x - 3 = 5
solve for x to get x = 8
3 years ago, the age of ade's mother was 5 times the age of ade.
formula for that is y - 3 = 5 * 5 = 25
solve for y to get y = 28
3 years ago, ade was 5.
today, ade is 8.
4 years from now, ade will be 12.
that should answer the question.
going a litle further, ....
3 years ago, ade's mother was 25.
today, ade's mother is 28
4 years from now, ade's mother will be 32.
the problem statement was:
3 yrs ago, ade was 5 yrs.
his mother's age was 5 times his age.
what will his age in 4 yrs?
i took this to mean:
ade was 5 years old 3 years ago.
his mother was 5 times his age 3 years ago.
that means his mother had to be 25 three years ago.
add 3 to both their ages and you get their ages today.
that would be 8 for ade and 28 for his mother.
4 years from now, ade would be 12 and his mother would be 32.
apparently, you didn't need to know how old his mother was to solve this problem because you only needed to find out how old ade was 4 years from now.
he was 5 three years ago.
he's 8 today (5 + 3 = 8).
4 years from now, he will be 12 (8 + 4 = 12).
the information about his mother's age was not necessary to solve the problem.
that makes the information supplied about his mother's age extraneous information, meaning it wasn't necessary in order for the problem to be solved.
