.
Let x be the Nicole present age.

Then the sister's age is 3x, according to the condition.

In five years Nicole will be (x+5); the sister will be (3x+5).

We are given

    x + 5 = %283%2F4%29%2A%283x%2B5%29.

To solve the equation, multiply both sides by 4.

    4x + 20 = 9x + 15

    20 - 15 = 9x - 4x

    5       = 5x

    x = 5/5 = 1.

ANSWER. Nicole is 1 years old now; her sister is 3*1 = 3 years old.

CHECK. In 5 years Nicole will be 6 years old; the sister will be 8 years old.

            6 = %283%2F4%29%2A8.     ! Correct !

Solved.
