Cary is 8 years older than Dan. In 5 years their sum will be 78. find the age of each man now.
If in 5 years, the sum will be 78, then it's now 78 - 2(5), or 68
With Dan's being D, Cary's is D + 8
We then get: D + D + 8 = 68
Solve for D, Dan's age
Add 8 to D to get Cary's.
