You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = Tony's age now
Let +b+ = Marvin's age now
------------------------------------
(1) +a+=+%28+b+%2B+1+%29+-+5+
(2) +a+-+6+=+%281%2F2%29%2A%28+b+-+6+%29+
------------------------------------
(1) +a+-+b+=+-4+
(2) +2a+-+12+=+b+-+6+
(2) +2a+-+b+=+6+
subtract (1) from (2)
----------------------------
(2) +2a+-+b+=+6+
(1) +-a+%2B+b+=+4+
---------------------------
+a+=+10+
and
(1) +10+-+b+=+-4+
(1) +b+=+14+
---------------------
Tony is 10
Marvin is 14
-----------------
check:
(2) +a+-+6+=+%281%2F2%29%2A%28+b+-+6+%29+
(2) +4+=+%281%2F2%29%2A8+
(2) +4+=+4+
OK

tony is 5 years younger than marvin's age 1 year from now.
t = (m+1) - 5
t = m - 4
6 years ago tony was half as old as marvin was then.
t - 6 = 1%2F2(m - 6)
Get rid of the fraction, multiply both sides by 2
2(t-6) = m - 6
2t - 12 = m - 6
2t = m - 6 + 12
2t = m + 6
from the first statement, replace t with (m-4)
2(m-4) = m + 6
2m - 8 = m + 6
2m - m = 6 + 8
m = 14 is Marvin's present age
:
how old is tony now?
t = 14 - 4
t = 10 yrs is tony's age
