You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Kelly's age plus her father's age is 32 years.
k + f = 32
In 12 years, Kelly will be one-third as old as her father.
k + 12 = 1%2F3(f+12)
multiply both sides by 3
3(k+12) = f + 12
3k + 36 = f + 12
3k + 36 - 12 = f
3k + 24 = f
:
Find her age now.
In the first equation replace f with (3k+24)
k + (3k+24) = 32
4k = 32 - 24
4k = 8
k = 8/4
k = 2 yrs is Kelly's age
and
f = 3(2) + 24)
f = 30 yrs is father's age

Check this in the statement
"In 12 years, Kelly will be one-third as old as her father."
2 + 12 = 1%2F3(30 + 12)
14 = 1%2F3(42)
