The time difference between "5 years ago" and "in 8 years" is 13 years.

If her age 5 years ago is half what it will be in 8 years, then her ages at those two times must be 13 and 26.

So she was 13 5 years ago, which means she is now 18.

Formally...

Let x = her age now
Then x-5 = her age 5 years ago
and x+8 = her age in 8 years

Then
x-5+=+%281%2F2%29%28x%2B8%29
2x-10+=+x%2B8
x+=+18
