You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let g and j be george and joes' ages, respectively. Then
g+j=42; g=42-j and
g-5=3(j-5)
42-j-5=3j-15
4j=52
j=13
g=29
George is 29, Joe is 13

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = Joe's age now
Let +b+ = George's age now
-------------------------------
(1) +b+-+5+=+3%2A%28+a+-+5+%29+
(2) +a+%2B+b+=+42+
-------------------------------
(1) +b+-+5+=+3a+-+15+
(1) +3a+-+b+=+10+
--------------------------
Add (1) and (2)
(2) +a+%2B+b+=+42+
(1) +3a+-+b+=+10+
-----------------------
+4a+=+52+
+a+=+13+
and
(2) +13+%2B+b+=+42+
(2) +b+=+29+
-----------------------
Joe is 13 now
----------------
check:
(1) +b+-+5+=+3%2A%28+a+-+5+%29+
(1) +29+-+5+=+3%2A%28+13+-+5+%29+
(1) +24+=+3%2A8+
(1) +24+=+24+
OK
