If you double Gerta's age and then subtract six, you have Zelda's age. Two years ago the sum of their ages was 29. How old are the girls now and how?
_____________________________________________________________________________

g, Gerta
z, Zelda
system%28z=2g-6%2C%28g-2%29%2B%28z-2%29=29%29

Sum of their ages NOW would be g%2Bz=29%2B4=33.

system%28z=2g-6%2Cg%2Bz=33%29

Let Gerta's and Zelda's ages be G and Z, respectively
Then we get: 2G - 6 = Z ------- eq (i)
Also, G - 2 + Z - 2 = 29____G + Z = 33 ------ eq (ii)
G + 2G - 6 = 33 ----- Substituting 2G - 6 for Z in eq (ii)
3G = 39
G, or
You should now be able to find Zelda's.

You can ignore tutor MathTherapy's admonition to beware of the first solution you got for this problem. You can probably see that his solution method and the first one you got are exactly the same....
