Question 1093441: I currently assume the answer to this question is 1.5 because I did it in my head but I don't know how to sole it algebraically, like to set up the equation because that is what is asked of me and I am not too sure how to set it up. Here is the question
John, who is 42 years old, has a nephew age 9. In how many years will the age of his nephew be one-fourth John's age? Solve algebraically.
Let x be "in how many years".
In x years, John's age will be 42+x years.
In x years, his nephew age will be (9+x) years.
The condition says:
42+x = 4*(9+x), or
42 + x = 36 + 4x,
42 - 36 = 4x - x,
6 = 3x ====> x = = 2.
Answer. In 2 years.
Check. You can check it on your own.
