P + J = 58.   (2)

Add the two equations. You will get

2P = 14 + 58 = 72  --->  P = 72%2F2 = 36.


Now from (2) J = 58 - 36 = 22.


Answer. Pamela is 36 years old.  Jim is 22 years old.
