You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Lt a = Andy's age
let m = mothers age
:
Write an equation for each statement
:
Andy says my mother is 9 times as old as i am.
m = 9a
In 3 years she will be only five times as old as i will be.
m + 3 = 5(a + 3)
m + 3 = 5a + 15
m = 5a + 15 - 3
m = 5a + 12
replace m with 9a (from the 1st statement)
9a = 5a + 12
9a - 5a = 12
4a = 12
a = 12/4
a = 3 yrs is Andy's age
:
:
Find Mom's age and Check this out in the 2nd statement
m = 9(3)
m = 27 yrs
"In 3 years she will be only five times as old as i will be"
27 + 3 = 5(3 + 3)
30 = 5(6)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = Andy's age now
Let +b+ = Andy's mother's age now
--------------------------------
(1) +b+=+9a+
(2) +b+%2B+3+=+5%2A%28+a+%2B+3+%29+
--------------------------
Substitute (1) into (2)
(2) +9a+%2B+3+=+5%2A%28+a+%2B+3+%29+
(2) +9a+%2B+3+=+5a+%2B+15+
(2) +4a+=+12+
(2) +a+=+3+
and
(1) +b+=+9a+
(1) +b+=+9%2A3+
(1) +b+=+27+
---------------
Andy is 3 now
---------------
check:
(2) +b+%2B+3+=+5%2A%28+a+%2B+3+%29+
(2) +27+%2B+3+=+5%2A%28+3+%2B+3+%29+
(2) +30+=+5%2A6+
(2) +30+=+30+
