You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Tom is 6 times as old as Todd. In 5 years Tom's age will be 1 year more than 4 times as old as Todd. How old is Tom?
------------------
NOW DATA:
Let Todd be "x" yrs old ; Tom is 6x yrs old
----------------------
5 yrs from NOW DATA:
Todd will be x+5 : Tom will be 6x+5
----------------------
EQUATION:
6x+5 = 4(x+5)+1
6x+5 = 4x+21
2x = 16
x = 8 yrs old (Todd's age NOW)
6x = 48 yrs old (Tom's age NOW)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let Tom be x years old, and Todd y years old
given
x=6y
In 5 years
x=1+%2B4y

x+%2B+y+%2B+5+=+1+%2B+4y+%2B+y
6y+%2B+y+=+1+%2B+5y
7y5y =1
2y+=1
y+=+1%2F2 Todd is 1%2F2 years old now
x+=+6%281%2F2%29
x+=+3 Tom is 3 years old now or
Check:
In 5 years Tom will be 8 years old, and Todd 5%281%2F2%29 years old, so
Since x=1+%2B4y
x+=+5%2B+1%2B+4%281%2F2%29
x=+6+%2B+2
x+=+8
