Age problems for mental solution

Problem 1

Roni is  30  years old and Grace is  22  years old.
How many years ago was Roni twice as old as Grace?

Solution

The difference in their ages is, was and will be 30-22 = 8 years.

Hence, Roni was twice as old as Grace, when Grace was 8 years old and Roni was 16 years old.

It was 22-8 = 14 years ago. ANSWER

Roni was 30-14 = 16 years old then.

Problem 2

Kres is  7  years older than  Kyle.  Fourteen years ago,  Kres was twice as old as  Kyle.
What are their present ages ?

Solution

Fourteen years ago, Kres was 7 years older than Kyle and twice as old as Kyle, at the same time.

Hence, 7 years ago Kres was 14 years old, while Kyle was 7 years old.

THEREFORE, their current ages are 14 years more, i.e. 28 and 21 years, respectively. ANSWER

Problem 3

Ethan is  29  years younger than Sarah.  7  years ago,  Sarah's age was  2  times Ethan's age.  How old is Ethan now?

Solution

The age difference between them is 29 years and remains to be constant forever.

So, 7 years ago Sarah's age was 58 years and Ethan age was 29.

Thus their present ages are 58 + 7 = 65 for Sarah and 29 + 7 = 36 for Ethan. ANSWER

Problem 4

Ridhima is  5  years younger than Aarav.  Four years later Aarav will be twice as old as Ridhima.  Find their present ages.

Solution

1. A is 5 years older than R,

and this age difference will be always in place.

2. Four years later A will be twice as old as R.

Hence, four years later A will be twice as old as R AND (according to n.1) A will be 5 years older than R, at the same time.

It means that 4 years later A will be 10 years old, while R will be 5 years old. ANSWER

3. Hence, their present ages are 6 years for A and 1 year for R.

Problem 5

Roel is as old as the combined age of his two brothers  Oski  and  John.  But  John is two years older than  Oski.
The combined age of the three last year was  3/4  of their combined age at present.  How old are the brothers now?

Solution

The combined age of three persons increases by 3 years in one year, which is totally obvious.

Hence, if their combined age last year was 3/4 of their combined age this years,

it means that 1/4 of their combined age this year is 3 years.

It, further, implies that their combined age this year is 12 years.

Next, the problem says that Roel is as old as the combined age of his two brothers.

Hence, Roel age is 6 years, which is half of 12 years and is exactly the sum of ages of the two other brothers.

One more step further. The two younger brothers combined age is 6 and John is two years older than Oski.

It gives you the

ANSWER. Roel is 6 years old; John is 4 years old and Oski is 2 years old.
