Question 740841: I am trying to create a three circle Venn diagram with unions and intersections. I can answer the question written out in a list form, but I can't seem to understand how it looks on a three circle Venn diagram. We are using attribute blocks via a virtual manipulative kit. There are 3 colors - red, blue, yellow; 4 shapes - square, circle, hexagon and triangle and 2 sizes - large and small. So total, there are 24 different attribute blocks. The question we were given is to show: (S U T) U NR, which is (square union triangle), union not red. I understand union will include all of those things, but again, can't seem to understand what that will look like on a Venn diagram.
Since I can't upload the picture I took, it looks like this: top left circle - all squares, top right circle - all triangles, bottom circle - anything that isn't red, outside the circles - red circles and red hexagons. HELP!!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The way I would do it, just doing a Venn drawing, would be to have a Universe rectangle with two circles in it. One of the circles would represent red circles and the other would represent red hexagons (the circles would NOT overlap). Then I would shade in everything in the universe rectangle EXCEPT the interior of the two circles. The desired set is the complement of the union of red circles and red hexagons.
