You can put this solution on YOUR website! Adding Real Numbers
Adding real numbers with the sign
1: Add the absolute values
Example: Think about money:
a. If you have dollars and you are given dollars more, how much do you have?
In this case numbers have a positive sign
= that is up , then up more
b. If you dollars and you dollars more, how much do you owe?
In this case numbers have negative sign.
that is down , then down more
Rule: to add numbers with same sign, add the numbers and keep the sign of the numbers involved. If both numbers are positive so the answer is positive. If both numbers are negative so the answer is negative.
Adding real numbers with the opposite sign
a. If you have dollars and then you borrow more, how much do you have?
that is up , then down 3 more
b. If you owe 5 dollars and then find more dollars, how much do you have?
that is down , then up more
Rule: to add numbers with opposite signs, subtract the numbers and keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.
