Question 27320: Help..I can't figure out how to do this problem: the square of 2y+7, plus 4 = y. I keep trying to isolate y, but because it is on both sides of the equal sign, I can't figure out how to do it and my book doesn't explain it well at all. I simplified it by doing the square of 2y plus the square of 7 = y-4, but then I'm not putting the y on the left. Can someone help straighten me out on this?

Question 27379: I have a test tomorrow and i need to understand how to work complicated word problems on Quadratic functions. Here it is... Scouts used a slingshot to launch a small rock upward from a cliff 250 feet above a river. The initial velocity was 320 feet per second. The formula h=250+320t-16t^2 gives the height in feet h of the rock relative to the river after t seconds. A) What is the maximum height reached by the rock? B) After how many seconds did the rock reach its maximum height? C) After how many seconds did the rock strike the river?

Question 27483: When using the quadratic formula to solve a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, the discriminant is b2 - 4ac. This discriminant can be positive, zero, or negative. (When the discriminate is negative, then we have the square root of a negative number. This is called an imaginary number, sqrt(-1) = i. )· Explain what the value of the discriminant means to the graph of y = ax2 + bx + c. Hint: Chose values of a, b and c to create a particular discriminant. Then, graph the corresponding equation. · What are examples of quadratic equations or applications with imaginary numbers?

Question 27213: Okay this is a really long problem that my math teacher gave me :-( and i'm stuck.
The problem is: 2x^6+3x^5+8x^4+15-2+12x-8=0
1) How many solutions are there and why?
*There are 6 because thats the highest degree.
2) How many real and imaginary answers are there?
* I think there are 3, 1, or 0 real positive and 3,1, or 0 real negative numbers... and i have no idea how many imaginary...
3) Solve for all 6 answers (and show wokr):
* I punched it into my calculator and figured out the first two answers (x-(1/2)) and (x+2)then i used each with synthetic division with the problem and broke it down to:
2x^4+10+8
Then I took out a 2
2(x^4+5+4)
Then i broke it down:
2(x^2+4)(x^2+1)
So thats what I have so far, (x-(1/2)) and (x+2) i only need 4 more but i have no idea where to go from here. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Question 28313: The general equation os a quadratic polynomial is p(x)=ax(squared)+bx+c with a,b,c all real numbers and a doesn't = 0. In this problem we show that three points in the plane uniquely determine a quad polynomial, )just as two points in aplane uniquely determine a line).
Step 1. Suppose that we were given the three point (-1,1),(1,5), and (2,10). We want to find the quad poly P(x) which passes through these points. So, evaluate p at each x value. For example, since p(-1)must be 1 (why?), we get
p(-1)=a(-1) squared+b(-1)+c=1 (arrow) a-b+c=1.
Evaluating p(1) and p(2), we get two more equations. What are they?
p(1)=
p(2)=
Step 2: We now have _________________ linear equations in the _______________ unknowns___,__________, and _______. Thus, we can try to solve for _,_____, and ____. Once we have values for ___,______, and __, our polynomials will be determined.
Step 3: set up the augmented coefficient matrix. We can start with
M= [1 -1 1 1]
[? ? ? ?]
[? ? ? 10].
There are 6 values missing. Where do they come from? What are they? What variable does the first column represent? The second? The third?
Step 4:
Using elementary row operations, we transform M into the matrix M' that looks like
M'= [1 0 0 1]
[0 1 0 2]
[0 0 1 2].
I need to be able to explicity show the computations -- i.e the row of operations - leading from M tp M'.
From this it follows that a=____, b____, and c=___. Thus our polynomial p(x) is p(x)=?
Step 5:
Check the answer by evaluating p(x) with the a, b and c values determined in step 4. We should have p(-1)=1, p(1)=5, and p(2)=10.
