Question 1016189: Hello, I am having problems with a word problem and hope someone can help. William, a logistician, needs to route a freight train that is 20 feet at its tallest point and 10 feet at its widest point within 3 days. The most direct path includes a single-track tunnel that needs 24 hour notice prior to use. If the tunnel is roughly modeled by f(x)=-0.1x^2+3.2x-3.5, should william make arrangements for the train to use the tunnel? Show work that supports your conclusion. **I have x=-b/2a=-3.2/2(-0.1)=x=16 and then I took f(16) and substituted 16 in the equation for x and got 22.1. So, the height of the tunnel is 22.1 and the train is only 20 feet so it will fit, correct? Also, is the 22.1 the maximum height of the tunnel, I'm confused on the max and minimum. And, how do I figure the width of the tunnel to make sure the train will fit width-wise?? Thanks for any help!

Question 1017786: Hi guys! So we have these quadratic equation word problems that we are solving right now. The problem I am about to list is one that I think I finished and got right, but I'm not entirely sure. Here is the problem and the answer that I got so you can check and help me:
You are trying to dunk a basketball. You need to jump 2.5 ft in the air to dunk the ball. The height that your feet are above the ground is given by the function h(t) = -16(t)^2 + 12t. What is the maximum height that your feet will be above the ground? Will you be able to dunk the basketball?
I completed the square where I found a a new "c" (9/64) and once I squared it, I got 3 plus or minus 3 all over 8. So basically, 3+-3/8. I got 0 when I subtracted, making that an extraneous solution. When I added 3 with 3, I got 6/8 which becomes 3/4. Does that mean 3/4 of a foot like I think it does? Thank you!

Question 1018224: A monic quadratic is a quadratic in which the coefficient of the quadratic term is 1. For example, r^2 - 3r + 7 is a monic quadratic, but 3t^2 - 3t + 1 is not.
A teacher writes a monic quadratic on the board.
Joanie copies the quadratic onto her paper, but writes down the wrong constant term (but the correct quadratic and linear terms). She correctly factors the quadratic that she wrote down on her paper, and determines that her quadratic has roots -16 and 2.
Kelvin is factoring the same quadratic that the teacher wrote on the board. He also copies the quadratic onto his paper, but he writes down the wrong coefficient for the linear term (but the correct quadratic and constant terms). He correctly factors the quadratic that he wrote down, and determines that his quadratic has roots -36 and 2.
What are the roots of the quadratic that the teacher wrote on the board? (Write your answers in increasing order, separated by commas.)
