Question 879489: Dear Math Tutor,
Please help me with: Write x^2 + 10x + 38 in the form (x+b)^2+c where the values of b and c are to be found.
a) State the minimum value of x^2 + 10x + 38 and the value of x for which this occurs.
b) Determine the values of x for which x2+10x+38 is greater than or equal to 22.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Completed square form of x^2 + 10x + 38 is (x+5)^2 + 13
therefore b=-5 and c=13
a) minimum value of x^2 + 10x + 38 is x less than or equal to 13
b) 12x+38=22
x=-1 and 1/3 or -4/3
so values for which x2+10x+38 is greater than or equal to 22 is x must be greater than or equal to -4/3.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Is all of that correct? I cant help but feel Im missing something as its out of 12 marks.
Please advise,
With gratitude
Nat

Question 881071: I guess it would be really easy for a lot of people out there but I just do not know how to solve this problem:
Edna paid at least Php1,200 for a pair of pants and a blouse. The cost of the pair of pants is Php600 more than the cost of the blouse.
I've tried using these two formulas but I don't think either of them is right.
Let x= blouse
x+600= pair of pants
1200= total
x+x+600+1200
2x+600=1200
2x=600+(-1200)
2x=600
2x=600/2
x=300
and
Let x=blouse
x-600= pair of pants
= total

( )/x
2=x

Question 881083: Hi,
Can somebody please help me out?
Our teacher instructed us to answer a few questions and I'm unfortunately stuck here on the third which is:
A motorcycle driver travels 15 kph faster than a bicycle rider. The motorcycle driver covers 60 km in two hours less than the time it takes the bicycle rider to travel the same distance.
I figured it would be something like
Speed
Let x = bicycle driver
x+15 = motorcycle rider
Time
Let x = motorcycle driver
x+2 = bicycle driver
60 = total
x+x+2=60
2x+2=60
2x+2-60
2x-58
x=29
x+x+15=60
2x+15=60
2x+15-60
2x-45
x=22.5
Any help would be appreciated! I'm still trying to solve this though.

Question 881195: In "completing the square" to derive the quadratic equation, there is a step in which the square root is taken of both sides of the equation. This yields x + b/(2a) on the left. Meanwhile on the right, the square root of the numerator (b^2 - 4ac) is taken separately from the square root of the denominator (4a^2), so that the denominator can be expressed as 2a. The square root in the numerator is left in the finished quadratic formula and given a +/- symbol. I was wondering if anyone could help me understand why the square root in the denominator is 2a instead of +/-(2a). Why +/- in the numerator but NOT the denominator?

Question 881234: The width of a rectangle is 8 less than twice its length. If the area of the rectangle is 79 cm^2 what is the length of the diagonal?
I am having trouble setting up my initial problem. I know that L X W = A and L X H = 79 cm^2.
So if the width is 8 less than twice its length, I set it up as: W = 2L - 8. Then I substituted 2L - 8 into my equation and came up with L(2L-8) = 79
2L^2 - 8L = 79.
Since I can't factor that, I used the quadratic formula to try to solve it. I come up with my length being 8.6. I plugged that into my formula to find the length. I came up with 9.2. I then multiplied 8.6 by 9.2 and came up with 79.12 so I figured I was ok on my area.
I then used a^2 + b^2 = c^2 and came up with 12.59 for my diagonal. The computer tells me I'm wrong. How do I solve this?
Can anyone help me?

Question 881317: The demand equation for a certain product is given by p = 132 - 0.015x, where p is the unit price (in dollars) of the product and x is the number of units produced. The total revenue obtained by producing and selling x units is given by R=xp.
Determine the prices that would yield a revenue of 9340 dollars
lowest price ___
highest price ___
I set up an equation 9430 = x(132-0.015x)
I thought I should solve for x and the substitute in to find p.
-132/(2 X -0.015) = 4400
I substituted 4400 for x in p=132-0.015x thinking I would get the a price -- $66.00 that was wrong.
I also tried to solve the above equation with the quadratic formula and couldn't come up with the answer either.
I put in 4400 and came up with 66 -- but that answer is neither the highest nor lowest price.
