Question 860457: You are flying a plane at a height of 1500m, when you spot a squirrel 500m directly below you fall from a cliff. The squirrel falls according to this data, and continues to fall with the same acceleration towards the ground (not a linear pattern):

Assuming that you can turn your plane instantaneously and fly directly downwards at 100m/s to try and save the squirrel, determine at what height and what time you catch the squirrel. (Don't worry, you will be able to save him)

What I know: my plane is going to be represented by a linear pattern and the squirrel will be represented by a parabola. I first need to find the equations of both lines and then I need to find the point where the two intersect.

Buried treasure. Ahmed has half of a treasure map,
which indicates that the treasure is buried in the
desert 2x + 6 paces from Castle Rock. Vanessa has the
other half of the map. Her half indicates that to find
the treasure, one must get to Castle Rock, walk x paces to the north, and then walk 2x + 4 paces to the east. If they share their information, then they can find x and save a lot of digging. What is x?

Question 861461: Bob hits a cricket ball into the air. The height(in feet) of the ball at time t seconds is given by h(t)= -10.5t^2+66.3t+6. Find the maximum height the ball reaches and the time in seconds when that maximum height occurs. I'm not looking for the answer but HOW to solve this as I can't find the formula.

Hi! I have to use the quadratic formula to solve this equation. I am working with the site cool math for a homework assignment. I have to follow example problems and then solve similar problems. The section I am currently working on is teaching about how to use the imaginary number "i" to solve when you get a negative number under the radical. When I attempted this problem, I got an answer but I did not get a negative under the radical. I believe I made a mistake please help!!

I'm having trouble with these 3 questions about quadratic equation and I can't do it. Stressing me out very much, are you able to help me please. I'll try write out the question as best as I can.
John likes to play baseball with his friends in the local playing fields. Last
week John hit his best shot ever. The trajectory of the baseball after he
hit it can be modelled by the quadratic equation
y = −x2/40+31x/40+4/5
where y represents the height in metres of the baseball above the ground,
and x represents the horizontal distance in metres of the baseball from the
position where it was struck by John. Assume that the surface of the
playing field is horizontal.
(a) The graph of y = −x2/40+31x/40+4/5 is a parabola.
(i) Is the parabola u-shaped or n-shaped? How can you tell this from
the equation?
(ii) Use algebra to find the x-intercepts and y-intercept.
(iii) Find the equation of the axis of symmetry, explaining your
method. Use this information to find the coordinates of the
vertex, giving your answers to two decimal places.
Those are the three questions I am really struggling with, if you help me with them be a massive help.
